HunterZ, now thats just silly. Of course we want feedback. Everyone needs Feedback.
As far as security holes in IE, yep they're there, they're probably there in FF too, just different. I'm sure most if not all browsers have security holes.
I've looked at opening them in t he correct browser when you click and thats not really an option as it would destroy the effectiveness of the ads.
The ads need to be ran in a browser window to work properly. Mozilla never fully developed a stable ActiveX control for this. Sadly that means that right now the only viable option is the IE activeX control.
Also in all honesty, I'm not 100% sure I'd switch to the mozilla control if it were available since more than half our users run ABP. People may not like supporting the site in this manner, but atm its whats available.
As far as people compiling the ad out and distro the stripped updater. I don't want to get into a cat a mouse game.
The overall attitudes on all sides of this thread make me sad. I appreciate the support from people, but please don't aggravate the malcontents. To those who are upset over this, I encourage you to express yourselves, however do so in a constructive manner. Don't berate myself or others. Keep calm and respectful. Overall this is a sad time.
Guys all I can say is that things will be worked on and improved over time, however that is over time and not immediately. I appreciate the feedback and trust me most of these thoughts I've had already.
However when we go towards that I still won't be blocking usage of the current system, this will be another system in addition to it.
I actually have long term plans to implement tagging as a standard and having stable only feeds for the updaters to use. However I don't have the time to invest in these changes at the moment but they WILL happen. However, I won't limit the usage of the unstable files. Those will continue to be available just like they are now.
Yes, they should be there already, you'll still see the targeted gaming ads though as well. but the text links are very similar to the way google links are, but aren't context based. I also can say for those there isn't any malicious content in the text based ads as I helped write the script that generates the html for those particular ads.
Can't get the newest version of WAU today, started setup.exe and it downloaded a manifest WowAceUpdater.application in firefox. Executing neither seems to work as it says "Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files." Attached is the full error log anyway:
I've found that if you view the publish.htm with ietab and install then after that there's no big deal
as with every application with ad banner someone will one day make the same but without the ads, and guess what i'll be going with the no ads version everytime because it simply is faster.
those ads are a dumb move, wonder how one can still think an ad ridden apps is a good thing.
The bad thing here is that the ads in WAU needs to pay for the usage from ALL the updaters. Now if a lot of people move away from WAU and all want ad free alternatives then I would have to do drastic, STUPID, things.
Oh and how is it 'faster' ? The ad in WAU is loaded Once per load, its only a few KB. Its more likely that perception is entirely in your head.
Ok guys, we're prepping for a new version of the updater. Along with this is some new ad solutions. The majority of our users will now have very plain simple text based advertising. I know its still not perfect, but I do hope that people will see this as a step in the right direction. More steps will be taking over the weeks ahead to improve everything.
No offense brother, but what planet are you on? You just *implemented click through ads.* What, aren't your financial problems instantly gone? Do you know what the odds of me donating to a site that purposely displays click-through ads that say "SHOOT THE MOVING MONKEY!" are? Pretty much even money that I'm not. It's almost like you haven't read (or at least comprehended) any of the completely coherent responses in the last 4 pages. You wanted click through ads to pay for the site, now you have them. Did you really believe that you'd implement click through ads and start getting MORE donations from random users?
To point the finger at the community at this stage is really just insulting. I, Joe User, stumbled across this on sourceforge, downloaded it and started using it. One day I open my faithful and reliable application to find it has been assaulted with IE windows and annoying ads that barely any users will click on, either out of security concerns or simply out of principle. I hop on the forums to explain alternatives and my perspective, and I find the author pointing a finger at ME, telling me I'm the problem?
Do I sound incredulous? That's because I am. If these are your responses to those of us that are doing our best to offer our suggestions to this application, I would recommend you start having someone else from the project serve as the PR.
I'm sorry if it came off wrong. Thats honestly not what I meant. A large portion of the angst in that post goes towards the people I've tried to talk to and have pretty much been told that no matter what I try to do they have no interest in supporting this site.
To be honest I'm at wits end. I don't want to offend anyone. And you're right I did do what I had time and energy to do, at the same time I've tried to do it in a way that shouldn't be offensive to people. I was wrong. I'd gladly work up a solution thats beneficial for all.
As far as all this, Its not that I'm unilaterlly casting aside your ideas. I've had many of them myself. I want to say I'm sorry to those that have felt like they are slighted in anyway. Any donations in the past have been greatly appreciated and at those times where essential in keeping this site running. But my costs are recurring.
In regards to the various methods of funding the site.
Donations: I've been accepting them the whole time, and they've helped and paid for the site, but they did not grow in accordance with the usage.
TipJar: I don't want to try to have to hold a "DO IT OR DIE!" sign over everyones head. I don't want to constantly be making posts saying "We're short, please donate!!!!!!!!" Those solutions are BAD imho.
Server Farm: Sounds great, and one day we'll probably (hopefully?) have the need for multiple servers. Logistics of management are debatable. But I can say from the logistic of management on multiple svn mirrors it was ugly. I don't want to receive multiple reports everyday saying things are out of sync and every X number of requests fail. I know there is a limit on what a single server can reasonable handle, but we're not quite there yet. In the next server move we will be branching out to multiple servers.
Limiting Usage: Yes this would help us, but it would also hurt us. Whether its bandwidth throttle or members only it'd still be annoying to the end user and actually limit their ability to work with it.
Premium: I think this idea is great! It gives a value added option for those willing to help contribute to the site. I want this. However, I'm not able to start it immediately, but the bills are due NOW.
Ads: Ya they suck, and no one likes them. Why would we? I hate commercials on television. Why would websites and apps be any different. But I'm not asking anything from you other than to see them, hell I know I barely really 'see' them as it is. I'm also trying to keep their numbers low and overall unobtrusive. I do like one thing from ads though. Not everyone can afford to donate. Everyone can click on the occasional ad. The money isn't coming from your pockets. The other things you can afford and want and desire. You aren't having to make a choice between wowace and something else. The money comes from the outside, and to me thats a personal relief.
I think thats most if not all the ideas, if I forgot one, I'm sorry.
One thing gets me though. Through all this bitching and complaining and criticizing (don't assume you're guilty of all of these, its a generalization) there is one thing I haven't gotten. A donation.
