I can run the shortcut from both my quick launch bar and my ObjectDock with 0 issues. Make sure you're creating the shortcut correctly and check the path. It should be the same as I have above, but substitute "Ryan L" for your account folder name.
Thus, less donations and less banner clicking to help support his wonderful application.
0% of that revenue goes towards sylvanaar or the people who take care of WAU. 100% of it goes to wowace.com to pay for the site and its bandwidth. That's probably what you meant, but I want to make sure that the distinction is clear. Due to people becoming so heavily dependent on WAU and recommending it to all of their friends, wowace has been in the red many, many times. So, if you don't want to use WAU anymore, then by all means... There are other updater apps which will pull from the wowace repository as well - but those don't have ads to pay wowace for the traffic they cause.
Quoting jakarath in case you missed it...
...it makes life MUCH easier on the developer (first thing I concern myself with when I'm making a tool I'm not charging for) as it ensures you are all using the most current version, and the bug that's been filling up the forums is still in the current version, as opposed to something fixed 2 revisions ago.
So many people were complaining about errors that they got using old, outdated versions of WAU. Sylv said it auto-updates to protect you. Maybe some of you have enough common sense to keep your apps updated as soon as a new version is available (just look at the WAU traffic ;) ). But you just need to look back through this thread to see that not everyone obsessed about using the current version of WAU, and then wondered why they had problems.
Yes, Recluse - both positive and negative feedback are good things. But there is a difference between constructive criticism and "OMG! WAU suxxorz now - I'm never ever using it again!" Sylv has said that if you know of a better way to do it (a well thought out way that was researched, documented, etc) then to let him know. But it probably got overlooked in all of the whiny posts.
I was the first one I think to ask why there were 2-3 copies of WAU on my machine, and how to create a shortcut to it. It didn't make sense either. But I wanted to use WAU, and I wanted to help support this site. So, I live with it. I live with having an extra couple MB on my hard drive, I live with having it in my Start Menu, and I live with approving it in my firewall with each update. Why? Because that's just how things are right now. Am I inconvenienced? Nah, not really. Not in the greater scheme of things. Then again, I'm not running Vista and I'm not uberly paranoid about the security of my system that I run more than ZoneAlarm and AVG.
Weigh your options, weigh the benefits over the cons. If you come up with a true reason why things should be changed and have a real suggestion of how to change them and how to code/implement it, then please - share with the rest of us. But if all you have is that you are mildly inconvenienced, then... You have a choice whether or not to click that "Post" button. Take a step back, a deep breath, and ask yourself if it's really necessary.
