WAU shows you if the addon you have installed on your machine uses externals (+) or not (-), and if it can't tell which it lets you know (?). If you hover over the addon, you will see a tooltip which has the "long form" of the version number eg. "WITH externals version 40000" for +40000.
11. For some reason some of my addons have externals and some dont...must be bugged.
WAU updates in AUTO external mode. This means addons are updated without changing whether they use externals or not. So a +40000 version is updated to +40001, and -40000 to -40000. ?40000 is updated to whichever you have specified as your default. Mine is "No externals" so i get ?40000 -> -40001.
If you need to change the externals mode of an addon you check the box next to it then choose "Update Selected Addons (With/Without) Externals".
12. I am seeing "Error during update" on some addons!
Update again - they should update fine. If not, then report the issue.
13. How do i configure my firewall for WAU?
WAU uses port 80, HTTP to communicate. The server it accesses is indicated on the titlebar usually http://files.wowace.com.

Open Regedit.exe.
Navigate to the node HCKU\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Deployment.
Set the string key LogFilePath to the full path of your preferred custom log location (including the file name)
This location must be in a directory to which the user has write access.

You can't connect to the server. Most likely its down, and 100 other people have already reported it. Don't be the 101st.

You need to run the program from an administrator account.
You need to fix the permissions on wow directory to give administrators full control, and propagate that to all subdirectories, or install WOW into some directory besides program files.
18. Some addons are displayed with strikethrough text. Why?
You have not configured your game to "Load Out Of Date Addons", so addons which are "out of date" are indicated with a strikethrough to indicate to you that they wont load if you install them.
You can check the "Load Out Of Date Addons" box in WoW, and the strikethroughs will be removed.
19. How do i generate diagnostic LAN traces?
Enable at a command prompt: "netsh lan set tra yes"

Let me preface these questions with this statement.. I am a total computer idiot..
Question 1:
I think I figured out the following to be a true theory: I keep getting a winsock corruption error which means that my WAU is not accessing the network and therefore these temp files are not being created which in turn causes the data old message. Is this correct?
Question 2:
What would keep causing my winsock to corrupt every time I start WAU? In other words even when I do winsock reset as soon as I restart the computer and try the wau again it corrupts again.
I'm not a sophisticated user either... But I just got a new computer, running Vista, instead of the XP I was running before. I've looked at the wiki and can't find anything to help. When I try to update my installed addons, I get:

But i cannot uninstal any Wowaceupdater (i haven't it in my control panel) i cannot install 1.9.44 ver. - i see always one error: "application cannot be started". Well I get this error now, the mod was working fine yesterday. problem is The dir and files I have to delete to fix the problem havn't been created. How do I check that WAU can access the network?

I am getting the same error. Not sure what I can do to fix it. I have deleted everything and tried a fresh install, but nothing seems to work. Any advice on how to fix this? Also, it seems that now when I click on mirrors on teh top nothing displays.

Also: You may need to delete the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Deployment\SideBySide

The cause is most likely that you didn't bother reading before posting.
