The key used to sign the application has been changed. So the application which the self-update finds will not have the correct signature, and will generate an error 30 seconds after running WAU, when WAU is not busy doing anything else
To fix this you MUST uninstall 1.9.43 from the control panel
Please reinstall using the standard wau file links. Version 1.9.44 is live.
Well okay.
Today I updated to 1.9.44 and sadly it installs itself somewhere an refuses to tell me where. Taskmanager told me it used ~30! MB of my RAM(mabye windows(display?) bug, never used a huge amount like this before).
And for some unknown reasen it broke my WAU 1.9.42 install (crashes while dowloading the ace-addons-index or shortly thereafter, maybe wants to send an MS-Errorreport, dunno, disabled them).
Luckily I found a 1.9.10-Version in my Download-directory on my Harddrive, everything works fine now again. A little executable in a directory of my choice, thats the way it should be.

You are running unsupported software now. And I'm not even going to address the memory issue.
my impression was, that this only affects 1.9.43 because other versions are not mentioned (for example like: "1.9.43 and lower" or "1.9.43-") if the FAQ is not exact this is not my fault.

my problem with 1.9.44 is, that i cannot decide where i want to install it. it installs itself somewhere an doesn't even tell me where!
On my Computer I want to decide myself which programs and where I install them. and 1.9.44 fails at "where", because of that I use an older version. simple, isn't ist?
So I suggest you change your installation routine so that everyone can decide where WAU is installed.
a good friend of mine said a while ago: "The only progams which install themself to a place unknown to the user should be viruses" (well he studies informatics)

All versions prior to 1.9.43 were unsupported, as is 1.9.43 now. This is why I made no mention of them.

thanks, good to know for the future
The file location is kept random to avoid simple path based script attacks against the executable and its data files. This is a security feature. The exe is stored in a known location in your user profile managed by .NET. If you tamper with it, you will see the "cannot update" warning. This also indicates your running an unsupported configuration.
I would suggest adding any question asked more than one or two times to the FAQ thread that has been started and then just linking it whenever people ask a redundant question. There's really no better way to handle it; people are going to ask no matter what, especially once the thread gets too long.
I got WAU to working now!! WOOT!..... except, I start-up my computer today and my WAU icon on my desktop no longer works, with no option when installing the new version to make it work, or make a new one. Only way I see now to make WAU work with a desktop icon is by setting the setup.exe file to it. What? So, now WAU has to "setup" everytime you you start it? I scanned through the other threads and must have missed an answer to this.... if there was one. Ya gotta make this stuff simple for us codeing illiterates.

Sorry to go semi off topic but is there somewhere you can point to learn more about this? I am a .NET 1.1 developer and am not aware of this new type of technology. It has me really curious.

ClickOnce is only available in .NET 2.0 and later.
I just saw that server version entry in the status bar. Has it always been there or have you added it recently? Anyway, thanks for that :-)
But since I still have to wait for that 30 seconds (and updating all addons is usually faster than 30 seconds) I'd like to make a feature request:
Can you please add the possibility to check for new versions immediately after starting WAU?

The idea is that you machine isnt bogged down when the app is started, but yeah, i'll look at tuning it.

Note: As of 11/07 WAU is no longer in active development.
A compiled version of the last/final build is available here: http://www.codeplex.com/wau
Supported Versions: There are no supported versions of this application.

http://www.wowace.com/wau/publish.htm if you use IE you can click the link.
If you use firefox, the easiest thing to do is use IE to download the app. Afterwards it can update on its own.
You can also get this addon for firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1608
Or you can also try:
http://www.wowace.com/wau/Install_WAU.zip
Note: The zip is probably the easiest.
