I still have no idea why change something that's not broken. The new CF client can only be described as rubbish.
I say that with sadness really since one of the main reasons I've moved fully to Ace2 was how easy it was to make sure I'm up-to-date without any issues all the time. Too bad that privilege is now gone :)
Hoping for a new/better improved client soon. Until then, I'm updating manually.
Cheers,
Elix
Hehe, your reason for moving to Ace is IMO not right. If the Updater is your main reason, then you really wouldn't understand the need to move to the new system.
Time and again, many people, pro- and anti- to the new move have explained the need, I suggest a little search friend.
Do the manual update for now ;) Traditional way... it's fun to go back to the beginning days of WoW ya know....
For me updates are / have been also one of the main reasons.
I know (since I also write addons for my guild) Ace means much more than easy update.
BUT - and thats the point - there are some addons out there which are a bit better than their "Ace replacement".
Anyhow - we live with a bit reduced functionality or such things - just because of the updates.
And raiding in a guild with about 100 members means you have to ensure that EVERY member has his addons up to date.
And this is not an easy task - beleave. I do raid orga for years and I know what it means to help people out with their update problems.
With WAU my support was (if anyhow) needed only for installation and a little "how to use WAU"; nothing more.
And I remember the past when we had CT_Raid, and all that "strange stuff".
So an easy, simple and functioning updater is more important than you might think.
Not for me personally - I can do it by hand - not that problem.
But for 50 other raiders in our guild it is a problem again due to the loose of WAU.
And I can find no fun to search for links, explain how to update, have dozens of game restarts and such things at the beginning of each raid -- as in the beginning days of WoW ya know...
Not for me personally - I can do it by hand - not that problem.

And I can find no fun to search for links, explain how to update, have dozens of game restarts and such things at the beginning of each raid -- as in the beginning days of WoW ya know...
I also manually update my addons now.
And it is tedious to go through different sites (wowinterface, wowui, wowace, curse) as the addons I use are sometimes only available at one or the other.
For me, I plan on using AddOns for WoW (and WAR) so I make sure I know how to install and maintain/update the addon. I won't know all of the bells and whistles of said addon, but, in terms of installing/updating it shouldn't be a problem.
People who go to these types of forums probably know enough to install and maintain their addons (not necessarily develop addons). It is people who only use WoW as an application like Outlook would not know the actual location of their Personal.pst and Archive.pst files.
Yes those people are the ones I'm talking about.
And - yes such people raid in our guild.
And - yes it will be pain (again) as it was in the days before WAU.
For Guild Updates/Sync, it is always better to have a Guild Compilation instead of asking them to install 3rd Party Software.
But, if an updater will be insisted, then asking them to install one is in itself requires a lot of explaining and teaching to do, which is no different with telling them to go here and download this.
If your guild requires certain addons (as most guilds do), and you see addon versions as an important factor, then release Guild Compilations or Packages, that is (again) always the best route for a guild.
What is important is to get the guild sync and they all use the same version, as you are pointing out. Using an updater is not the correct way. In fact, they have the right to decline to install a third-party software.
And secondly, if anyone is into using AddOns, they should never rely on updaters, heck, not even start using AddOns by using an updater. Use AddOn, then start from where we all started - no updaters.
Guild requires AddOns? Then it is the guild's problem and responsibility to keep their members informed and well instructed. Updaters and any third-party software are not the best way for guilds.
And CT_Raid and those stuff are not "strange". Many addons today originated from the CT AddOns (and Cosmos AddOns).
In our guild and the guild of my friends, I took the responsibility to update them, direct them to the correct links, etc. I never asked them to install third-party software "just to get the required addons". All these guilds are doing just fine. And I haven't even thought of creating a guild compilation yet.
Pointing them to the right direction like where to download the latest one should get them going. Informing them of new versions should get everyone in sync.
So yes, IMO, updaters are only for convenience. It should be used only by those who started from manual search and download. That way, if that updater suddenly disappears, you'll have no problems. (Which already happened...) Also, if some of them were hacked, they can not blame you or the guild for telling them to install a third-party software.
sorry the switch time was realy wrong and the way too.
better where
1.only at the same time wauupdate with curse ,curse not on svn to so long seize can.
2.if curse svn to use can switch off from the old wau
3.which me extremely disturbs the curse later for automatic updates premium the entrance required.
4.have you think thought wotlk changes is that many on svn usually with the change are daily to come dependent?
5. where this way not better behind 2 or 3 weeks that came wotlk out.
oki I cannot update without by hand trozdem feel I that as correct.
I understand that the servers money cost pay to one.
sorry use babbelfish my own English is still worse in the writing
3.which me extremely disturbs the curse later for automatic updates premium the entrance required.
A paid subscription is required for fully automatic updating, because the bandwidth you use to download addons costs money. If you visit Curse.com to download updates, you view ad banners, and the ad company pays Curse. If you download updates through the client with a single click, you don't view ads, and nobody pays Curse. Therefore, if you wish to download with a single click, Curse reasonably asks that you pay a small fee to help offset the loss of ad revenue.
As posted in the other client thread, the "manual update" process in the client is not at all unreasonable. Click an addon. A dialog appears. In the dialog is an ad banner (Curse gets paid when you view it) and a button. Click the button to update the addon. When the update is complete, the dialog disappears. Click another addon, and repeat until all of your addons are updated. On a normal day you will probably 5 updates at the most -- this adds about 9 clicks and 30 seconds to your update time compared to "click one button to update everything". Are 9 clicks and 30 seconds such an enormous burden to you? I don't think so.
4.have you think thought wotlk changes is that many on svn usually with the change are daily to come dependent?
1. WotLK is not live yet. WotLK is only on beta and PTR servers. The main concern of addon authors is making sure their addons work on the live servers used by the vast majority of WoW players. Therefore most authors do not consider it critical to release every change for WotLK yet.
2. Authors can choose to push a release version every time they make an SVN commit. Most authors don't, because not every commit is worthy of a new release version. Authors who are working on WotLK changes in the SVN trunk will release a WotLK version when they are finished. I've said this before, and I will say it again: if you want control over when authors release versions, write your own addons.
arghh Babbelfish has too badly translated from the German .
i have the problem that when pre patch came or at 13.11 the wotlk addon that alot of my used ace addons not rigth funktion with the old have i the chance over update wau svn bugs at hours too min korrectet is that i can live at this time have the hope that the stable versions are full funktion .
too 4. i will not control over the authors .curse client can not update my addon over svn the most author have bugs when patchday was fix in hours . i have use wau on patchdays 3 -5 on day .
Ah, I see what you're getting at. But, it actually won't be any more a problem than the old system. Let me give you a breakdown of how the systems work.
Old system:
1. Author commits a change to his addon to SVN.
2. At regular inteverals, the WowAce server creates a new zip for the addon if there has been at least one SVN commit since the last zip was made.
3. WAU (and other updaters, and the files.wowace.com pages) downloads the newest zip when you run it.
New system:
1. Author commits a change to SVN.
2. If author wishes for users to download the new revision, he marks a tag in SVN.
3. At regular intervals, the WowAce server creates a new zip file for each tag that hasn't already been zipped.
4. The Curse Client (and the curse.com website) downloads the newest zip when you run it.
The only real difference between the old system and the new system is that the server only makes a new zip if the author has marked a tag -- i.e., the author has said "server, please make a zip of this version". This is a good change, because it means that authors don't have to be afraid to commit something they haven't had time to test, because users won't be getting every single commit.
As a user, you shouldn't notice any change in the speed with which authors get their addons working in WotLK. When patch day hits, authors will surely want their addons to work as soon as possible, and will mark tags for versions that work.
You should also notice that you download less "useless" updates (i.e. you play in the German client, so it's a waste of bandwidth for you to download 12 updates for the Korean locale in one day) and that you don't so often download versions with obvious bugs that break the addon.
Does the paid version of CC even work?
As a new user you get a limited premium account.
So it (I think) works for some time as the payed client.
My experiences?
Start the Client - it ask about scanning for Addons - I say YES.
The only thing it finds (100+ existing addons) is CurseProfiler (or so).
I set "Scan on start" and restart CC.
What I get is an error message:
"Can't creat directory ''....."
Then again - in front of the empty addon list.
--If scan does anything - for sure it does not scan my folders :)
Yust to check this out I install an addon via CC.
(I did not check if it runs - but the files are there in the correct directories)
Than I manually delete the addon's folders.
Restart CC.
I "scans" - and finds the deleted Addon as installed :)
Not a big thing - I hit "refresh" - nothing happens.
I say uninstall - and it does (at least remove it from the list).
So what kind of software is this?
Something that we should work with, or even pay for it??
What does this scan mean? Why not leave it out - or make a dialog like:
--Sry, the authors are not able to implement this feature
--We think it must be possible since WAU, Matrix, JW.., WUU... do it also.
--But at the moment we sit and wait for more users to pay.
--Than we will try to solve this quest (maybe)
Can't create directory indicates a problem with read/write rights. Based on that, it's likely you are running vista and need to adjust your settings of the AddOns folder.
Also be sure to make sure that the CC points to your wow directory. (THis is it, I am not forced to install CC to be able to give better advice)
You are wrong - I run XP-SP3 as administrator (need to since I develope software :)).
The problem is - CC tried to create a folder named '' (Nothing, empty, noname...).
It's not a matter of rights - it's a matter of a bug.
And yes it points to the right directory. Otherwhise it wouldn't have been able to install an addon (as I wrote).
Computers are part of my profession as software author and CTO for network infrastructure in our company.
BUT - I searched through the post's and I guess the problem with the scan is, that it is not a directory scan - it scans some (self created) database (XML file or whatever).
There are post here about it.
a.) Post about the "problem" like:
-- after installing (one by one) my addons via CC they are listed
-- delet an addon manually does not remove it from the list
b.) Posts about how to overcome it:
-- Backup all you addons
-- Del addon folder
-- Install them via CC
-- Add the missing ones from the backup
-- .....
It is nothing more or less than a "wrong named feature" - or a misunderstood (and missed) feature - no directory scan - DB scan it means.
What does mean nothing less or more than CC is missing a very important (contained in all other updaters) feature - the ability to find changes in the addons if not made via CC.
And why it tries to make a "namless" directory - who knows :)
The error message is pretty poor (in a beta I would expect more info about what it tried to do) so I can't figure out more.
There is also a "forum" about the CC beta.
Take a look -- a lot of posts about problems.
Some posts about "I'm so happy - it updates my 5 addons" :)
And NO response from the authors - not even a useless one like you find them here:
--"We know this, we will change this, we will try to fix this, it will become better...."
Maybe the authors are GMs at WoW: "The problem is well known. Any other help I can provide to you? And may you never run out of arrows..."
