If i leave the client running will it automatically download updates for the addons i have installed using the install via client option or will it still be a open the client and select update all addons?
I noticed today that the update all addons option doesnt work. I set the client up, i am using the latest version (the client didnt auto-update so i assume i am running the latest version) yet i had to close the client down completely when tryin to update some of my addons. It was like it froze or something. I had to right click on each addon and select update. Is this a bug?
If your a premium user, and auto install premium updates is checked, then addons will get auto installed if you are away from your computer etc. What the update all addons button does is check to see if there is a new version. If your not premium youll get the green arrows on the addon indicating it needs an update. If you are premium and you don't have auto install premium updates, you also get the arrows. If your premium, and updates are enabled, it should go through your entire addon list and if anything needs an update it will auto install it.
Warning, I'm not in the computer field, and detailed technical explanations will be over my head. My questions is simply of safety. I've not heard of any virus/malware creep into the svn using WAU. I *have* heard of some coming from curse, due to bogus addons being uploaded to their site (hence I haven't downloaded much from them this past year). Is there any reason to be worried about some trojans passing through this system to my computer?

In other words, if we're not premium users, there's no auto-update? Kaelten, I really hope curse paid a lot for wowace, if they are now trying to make money out of it by selling premium accounts.

I *think*... yes. Because there will be ads in the new client, and that includes JavaScript (at least it was said that they want rich media ads) and other crap things which will make it possible that a bad ad installs malware on your PC.

while its impossible to say 100%, we're doing a lot more on the curse side of things. Manually checking all files and projects and we're keeping the same security measures on the wowace side of things.

No word about ads? IMO if you allow every HTML code (including JavaScript and plugins) in the ad-areas of the client their are the biggest problem.

I hope so because that's one of my biggest fears. Way to many people are getting their accounts hijacked over here in Europe because of dodgy adverts and links.
All I want is to update my addons, I don't want a whole load of hidden stuff on my machine. I'm very careful about what software I install and for some reason instinct tells me to be wary of Curse because they seem to be in it purely for the money whereas WoWAce were in it for the development side. I absolutely love the addons that have come from wowace but if it comes down to it I can do without rather than use Curse to be truly honest.
You make it seem as though out intention is to be dodgy and install covert ads. I'm pretty sure it is in our interest to not serve malware, and infact it would be in our interest to keep it as secure as possible.
Will the "non-pernal information gathering and uploading2 part if the current client be present in the new one?
And if so, will there be an option to completely rip that garbage out of it?
To what end would you wish to disable it? It's mainly used to correlate bugs and issues in the client, and some of the issues I've seen I would've been been hard pressed to find a solution for without such data.

Simply becous i don't trust Curse enough to want to allow that their client gathers and sends information without me knowing what information, why/whatfor and specificly allow it to send it after seeing what it contains.
It's computer hardware specifics. No software information is pulled. No settings or information is pulled. CPU specifications are pulled using the cpuid asm instruction and also the number of processors is gotten from a call to GetSystemInfo(). Video mode, resolution and driver version are gathered using the d3d9.dll and enumerating the devices in the return. Free disk space is gotten using the GetDiskFreeSpaceEx api. Free ram is gotten using GlobalMemoryStatusEx api. The os version is gotten using GetVersionEx(&osv);
Currently we take the .zip and we simply extract its contents into the interface/addons folder. We don't muck around with its contents, I believe that iss what you mean by unpacking. Does this have to do with the embedding/disembedding? If so there will be support for that soon.
Wait, so it doesn't have an option to delete the current version of the addon before unpacking a new version over the top of it? I've had that cause problems before when an addon author meant for files to no longer exist in an updated version, so I have set WAU to "delete before extracting."

But for a mod like Skinner, where you have to drag the lua file things into another folder inside the addon, this means you'd have to drag them all over again every time you update.

Bad example, as if the individual skin files were updated, you'd still have to copy the updated ones you wanted to the SkinMe folder anyway...

But just to save you some time - both the free and premium version will automatically check for updates when you start them up. The difference between the two is that on premium you will get a big button you click to download all your updates automatically. On the free version you'll have to do 2 clicks (roughly) on each one to get it to update.
Now if they do something to remove localistion updates and unnecessary library updates then you may only have to do this for a few addons. So I don't think you'll have to do 2 clicks on each and every one of your addon folders. So let's say Cartographer , Omen and Threat-2.0 updates. Instead of having to tell every folder to be updated I think you'll only click to update on "Cartographer" and not the gazillion folders Cart uses
Finally Curse have been silently funding the wowace servers and bandwidth for months now. So your accusation of them "selling out" is invalid . You have been getting a free service for years for a service that costs thousands in bandwith costs per month. Now it's time to give a little.

No, but this is because we'll be offering a new packaging method for those types of addons.
