Me too. And that's why I came up with squared unit frames 18 months ago.

Square is a nice default; however, it isn't always the layout with minimum mouse travel. If you have to make the frames wider for some reason, a wide rectangle will be less mouse travel than square with the same width.

There is a problem with grid's option system for new users, but I don't think the advanced options are large part of that problem. Perhaps removing advanced options would make things more usable for new users, but it would be at the cost of making grid less usable for some advanced users.

I'll speak for Pastamancer! Everything that's in an "advanced" menu could be completely removed without affecting the usability of Grid.

I'd find grid less useable without these options. The options are not just cosmetic.

When you're optimizing your interface, things like aspect ratio of the unit frames, padding, direction of healthbar can make a difference in your efficiency and precision.

I worry about visibility/readability of indicators, distance of mouse travel, ease of hitting a target, protection from hitting the wrong target. I would be very sad to see rectangular horizontal health bars go away.

Seems like a bug in Blizzard's code. Logging in should have the events in the same order as /reloadui in my opinion.

I can change the anchor point so this behavior doesn't interfere with the rest of my ui.

    Thanks Pasta.

Thanks for tracking this down. I tried the patch and it still isn't quite right for me. when I log in the raid frame is all scrambled. If I /reloadui it fixes itself, and when I exit combat it fixes itself.

By scrambled, it looks like this (pardon the ascii screenshot):
     ,-------.
    |Traman | Doris Redshi Holyfl Juggup
    |Holyfl | Redshi Doris Traman
Nature

Jubgup
    `-------'

Only the first column has the grid background.

When I /reloadui it looks right:
     ,------------------------------.
Holyfl Redshi Doris Traman
Nature

Jubgup
    `------------------------------'

I disabled my other grid addons just in case, and it still shows this scrambled grid. I use horizontal groups, but I got a bad grid with vertical groups as well.

Edit: Maybe this is what you meant by showing both the party and raid frames. I didn't realize it because the bottom group (pets) got obscured by other ui elements. This is better than the current situation which hides the raid.

That's actually expected. You can't create secure frames while in-combat.

It may just be that when you're re-logging that you're getting put into combat before your client knows you're in a raid.

I suspect the above is what's happening.

What I'm confused about, is how it's able to create a party frame while in combat, but not a raid frame.

Unless the solo frame is the same as the group frame, and when you log in grid sees you as solo, then in combat, then in raid.

A workaround (if it's possible) would be to allow people to not switch between group and raid and solo, and to always be in raid mode. I know I would prefer this as it would allow my 5 man party and pets to be in a raid layout instead of spilling outside the 5x5 region I've set aside for Grid.

I don't understand how secure frames work though so it might not be possible.

I use 25 with pets as well.

Easy to reproduce. Just get a raid together, put my character in a separate group, get in combat and exit the game window. When I restart the game and log in, only have my party until combat ends.

I attempted using the patch, no change in the behavior.

I can get the same behavior without restarting the game by entering combat while soloing, and then getting added to a raid. Until combat ends I cannot see the whole raid, I can only see my current party.

Are you using any automatic layout addons for Grid?

Relogging in-combat is part of why you have to pick a raid layout in Grid normally.

This happened to me last week. D/C on gorefiend, when I relogged I was only able to see my party in grid. One we wiped and were out of combat it reset back to normal.

    I don't use an automatic layout add-on.
