As this is a rather complex problem, I tend to reply with "sorry, not possible" instead, and I hope you now understand why. If you really want to help, please create a wiki topic for SecureRaidGroupHeader plus a discussion thread, get more developers to post there, work on possible suggestions for Blizzard, contact Esamynn, Cide and Iriel, let them know about these suggestions. I'll also be happy to email the suggestion to Slouken - once we really know what we'd want to suggest. Until then, we're stuck with what we have.
Great, thank you for the very thorough answer, maia. I will update the Wish List with a synopsis of this information in the very near future, and a link back here to your answer.

There was another addon that I used before this one that had a nice feature. The addon was Mailto it would put a dropdown window into the send box and let you add names to it instead of having to type them and let it autocomplete the name.
I was just about to post about MailTo here, as I was looking for Grennon's contact email address to ask him about whether he would accept patches for a couple of features that MailTo had but that I miss, and the drop-down was one of them.

First off, though, thanks for doing Gmail, Grennon. I like it very much.

This drop-down list feature is one I also make use of. Will you add it, or will you accept a patch from me if I add it?

Another feature of mailto was reporting on how much money was collected, as someone mentioned a few posts back. Same question as above: do you want to add it, or accept a patch for it?

Also, a very useful feature was that it tracked when mail was delivered or about to expire. So, an hour after I sent something, I'd see a message that said it had been delivered, or I'd get that message when I next logged in. Now, I realize that GMail is not currently tracking specific mailbox contents for people, but another addon that many people use is -- CharacterProfiler. And, I'm sure others, but CharacterProfiler is especially common because people often use it to maintain their information on the web through UniUploader. So, you can just use CP's information as the backing store. Would you add this feature, or accept a patch for it?

Relatedly, I wrote a new Ace mod this weekend that was inspired by MailTo's /mtl (MailTo_Locate) feature: it will search all of you and your alts mail, bank, inventory, and equipped items from the chat console, looking for any item names that match the argument string. This really doesn't belong in a mail mod, IMHO, hence why I put it in a new mod named "Rummage" that I'll be uploading to Wowace this week.

Somewhat relatedly, I gather it is not possible to always keep an 8x5 configuration when changing groupings, in particular when grouped by class, unless you get blessed with having exactly 5 of each of 8 classes

This has been asked a dozen times (guys, please scroll back a bit before asking), and due to blizzard limitations in their secure raid header code its currently not possible.

Well, first off, you'll please kindly note that I did know that this has been asked for as I indicated in the message to which you are replying. What I asked for was a more complete explanation of just why it isn't possible, because the brief sentence above just isn't satisfying even though I trust you that it is the core of the issue. It just has a bit of cognitive dissonance with "well you know everyone in the raid, why can't you arrange them however you want?"

I'm sorry, as well, that I will not read 39 pages of messages here. It is a bit much to ask of people. Something that comes up a lot like this is a perfect candidate for being addressed in an FAQ and in the wishlist, which you can then remonstrate people for not having read. I'll be happy to update the Wiki with the extended answer.

Thank you for the idea of one other way to address the DEAD issue, which I'll give a try. I gather from your answer that configuring it the way I asked about (controlling the alpha/color of the center indicator itself) is not currently available?

First off, I love Grid. It has been a big help in cleaning up my interface.

How can I configure Grid so that when the DEAD center indicator is showing, the class color is more clear? As I have Grid configured now (largely the defaults) it just prints a white word and the faded background makes it really hard to see the color. I'd prefer to have the DEAD at full alpha and in the color of the class. Where do I look to configure this?

Somewhat relatedly, I gather it is not possible to always keep an 8x5 configuration when changing groupings, in particular when grouped by class, unless you get blessed with having exactly 5 of each of 8 classes. The last item of the wish list is where I learned this, but it doesn't provide enough information for me, a raid API newbie, to understand why. If you know who everyone in the raid is, why can't you just order them all however you want?

I've got a nice spot for Grid in my UI that is perfect for 8x5 layout, but as a priest I often want to order by class. Even if I can't control the class order, just grouping them would be a big help. So I'd like one key I can hit that toggles between different layout configurations. CT Raid had this, but I will readily admit it also changed the space requirements of the frames. Just be nice to see Grid do it better. :)
