    ok, ty for the info.

    i took a look at quest helper, and i couldn't really tell what lines of code put the icons on the maps. i don't have any time to download and look at any other addons, now but i will later. but if anybody could show me some simple lines of code to place something on either map, i'd be very greatful.

    Can anybody help point me in the right direction to making an addon that puts icons on the mini map and world map? I can't seem to find any tutorial or anything like that.

    toooo many replies to read, but would a much simpler solution to not having your mods jacked be to just place so much confusing, worthless-but-seems-like-it-actually-does-something half doing-something code into your mod and in nearly every reasonably-possible situation make the mod state that it is your work and then delete ALL possible format & codes to the point of which your addon is soooo complicated to try and understand if you do not know what any of it does that you would just either give up, or copy & paste it directly into a compilation and haave the mod say that somebody else made it? and perhaps making it state that if this is in any compilation, it is not authorized?

    Thanks for the help, I'm pretty sure I got all that (if not, I will once I start messeing with it some more).
    So the follow line of code would only be saved on a per-character basis, right?
      self.db = LibStub("AceDB-3.0"):New("TestDB", { profile = defaults }, "Char")

    And as far as my coding experience goes, I was just really tired at the time of posting this thread, and I for some reason thought it would have been better to say create instead of dimension/dim. I know how to program in VB pretty well, and I'm going to try to go to college for video game programming. If you exlain how something work, I will understand ti as long as I understand the syntax in how it is used (which is the only think I seem to ever have much trouble in understand at first).

    Now what I want my addon to do is I want it to pretty much track everything that your char does, ish. Have you ever wondered "I wonder how many murlocks I've killed" or "I wonder how many times I have been to the bank?" I'm going to make my addon keep track of a lot of stuff like that. Like how many times you have been buffed, or buffed somebody else, or even how many messages you've said on say, or guild, or yell etc. A lot of variables I will be using will be just single integer variables, and others will be more like an array of variables (based on each of whatever the game event's variables are (such as "CHAT_MSG_SAY")). What do you suggest I start doing/learning to make sure I'm doing this efficiently?

    Make youe readmes in notepad, or html if you need it fancy. .rtf files always try to open in Microsoft Word if the user has it, and then Wordpad if not (unless changed from the default configs), and well, the trying to open in Microsoft Word is annoying for users who have the free trials (from Vista & such) on their computers, and the point of a readme is to have a simple text file that some people might bother reading. If it isn't simple (MS Word isn't simple) then a lot of people are going to close it before reading it.

    Can somebody please write up a tutorial on how to use this please?

    But what this post is about:
    How do I create variables with AceDB, set what type they are (like string, boolean, etc), and set default values for them?
    And how do I make sure that after the default value is used, my addon no longer uses the default value and uses the modified value?

    Edit: I create variables by just having a line like "local VARIABLENAME = default value" right?
