The problem people have with this, is that it's the site known as Curse asking for money to make updating easier. Even though Kaelten is now with Curse, people ignore this fact and focus on the company (It's not Ace (WAU), it's Curse (Curse Client)! Oh noes!! ;)).

Exactly they here "Curse" and "WAU closing" and immediately shut their ears against anything else we have to say.

Despite the fact that (correct me if I'm wrong)

Kaelten's been employed by Curse for months....

The new curse client is only in beta so we're interested in getting it improved (which takes time) .....

Curse has been providing bandwidth and server space unofficially for months ....

The reason? I did not know any better

Well now there's a better way. Update less addons less often (once you take out localisation updates and minor library/code updates you aren't left with many addons that need updating regularly). Subscribe to their project page on the wowace or curse site and get an email when they update. You can then open up the email and go "hey cool they did an update to fix the threat problem they were having on galv" and go update (totally made up example , yes I know accurate threat data is now attainable).

IDK If they attend to have a way of sending out emails for release quality or omg-you-must-update-now-major-bug-fix addons yet. A way of viewing simply what's changed would be nice but a way for the authors to click a button to notify users on a major bug fix change would be even nicer :D

With "not checking the website" I did also not see any "Hey, could you help me out with some donations?" messages.

No offense intended here but I do believe Kaelten stated that even donations wouldn't of been enough . IMHO it would of lead to the same situation once the donations dried up ...it would only have put it off to a few months or so. I think interest in giving donations would dry up after a patch day once addons started getting stable.

Your idea for a monthly fee type service is pretty good ...isnt that what Kaelten is doing right now ?

The first feature used to be sort of available via an addon called Yatlas (not to be confused with Atlas), but it's long since abandoned. I heard there was some bloated pack called Carbonite that has a Cart3-style map addon included, but I haven't bothered checking that out.

The second feature you can get with any map addon via HandyNotes + TomTom.

Yeah I use Yatlas but I think it misses the zoom in / out with the scroll wheel on the mouse. That was pretty sweet.

    I'll give HandyNotes a try :)

It's pretty and shiny exactly the same way Vista is pretty and shiny - it's a fucking monster that was coded horribly. The kicker is that the code's been obfuscated so nobody can easily fix this other than the author. Also, forcing a garbage collection can trim 5MB of memory from it, so there's rampant lackluster table-usage as well.

Hmm that's interesting. Personally I haven't had a problem with it ..Mind you I was coming from using QuestHelpter that in my experience was even worse memory wise.

IDK It's 2am in the morning so I could be missing something here ....

Ok here are the features I loved about Cart 3 :

    * zooming in/out with the the scroll wheel on the mouse. when you got really close it would switch to a terrain map
    * being able to click on a map and create either a note or waypoint easy
    * showing other people on the map like guild mates and the like

What would you guys recommend for the first 2 features ?

you do understand that this hurts the site more than helps? by not using the right client your not supporting the site and if it becomes a problem they'll start turning to more drastic ideas, like disabling updates alltogeather via client programs, then we'll have to all back to the old way of looking up the addon and downloading a zip file.

I guess He thinks Money grows on trees (this is to the guy who's talking about reverse engineering the client)

    It's computer hardware specifics. No software information is pulled. No settings or information is pulled. CPU specifications are pulled using the cpuid asm instruction and also the number of processors is gotten from a call to GetSystemInfo(). Video mode, resolution and driver version are gathered using the d3d9.dll and enumerating the devices in the return. Free disk space is gotten using the GetDiskFreeSpaceEx api. Free ram is gotten using GlobalMemoryStatusEx api. The os version is gotten using GetVersionEx(&osv);

Kolie why does the updater need to know this ???

I mean the updater would know what system its running on since they will be a seperate client version for each operating system (I think). It would know by how its compiled that to move a file on OS X it's a "mv" command for windows its "MOVE"

I don't see any reasonable explanation of why you need to get that information.

I can understand Disc Space to make sure you have the room to download the addon but Video Mode ??? Free Ram ??? You're essentially downloading text files with little picture files in folders. Why the need to know video mode for that ??

The World of Warcraft client handles everything needed to make sure a computer can run it ...having this check in the updater since a little excessive to me

Unless of course you are wanting to build in functionality other than just updating addons (like building in a developer mode for beta testers of addons or maybe a runtime enviroment for addon authors). If so why don't you just say that silly :D

No OSX client (for now) and being forced to wait for one specific client is sad.

Kolie has said in this very thread that there will be one a few weeks after they have a stable version. They are writing it using a cross platform library so it shouldn't take that long to come out (they just need to recompile it , test it , write some graphic bits). I've seen the website for the library they are using and trust me it won't take em long to come out with a OS X Client.

You know you really should of done some research ie Googling and reading of forum topics before posting this :D

In other words, if we're not premium users, there's no auto-update? Kaelten, I really hope curse paid a lot for wowace, if they are now trying to make money out of it by selling premium accounts.

    *sigh*

    Please go read :

    http://www.wowace.com/forums/index.php?topic=14316.msg236235

    All 22 Pages :D

But just to save you some time - both the free and premium version will automatically check for updates when you start them up. The difference between the two is that on premium you will get a big button you click to download all your updates automatically. On the free version you'll have to do 2 clicks (roughly) on each one to get it to update.

Now if they do something to remove localistion updates and unnecessary library updates then you may only have to do this for a few addons. So I don't think you'll have to do 2 clicks on each and every one of your addon folders. So let's say Cartographer , Omen and Threat-2.0 updates. Instead of having to tell every folder to be updated I think you'll only click to update on "Cartographer" and not the gazillion folders Cart uses

Finally Curse have been silently funding the wowace servers and bandwidth for months now. So your accusation of them "selling out" is invalid . You have been getting a free service for years for a service that costs thousands in bandwith costs per month. Now it's time to give a little.

I'm on a Vista computer, don't know if that has something to do with it.

Depends do you have WOW installed to your Progam Files folder ?

If so then you would effectively have 2 WTF folders - one in the wow folder the other in a user store folder. I would check the permissions on your WTF folder to make sure it isnt read only or something

posted a message on Quel'Danas FP at level??
    Quote from Moon Witch »

Ok, this will sound stupid. I had previously read that only lvl 70 players would automagically get the FP to the Quel'Danas, I looked on the PTR, and didn't have it. My character on the PTR was lvl 64. On the live servers, I levelled to 67. So I logged in today, which took forever (Tanaris was one of the last realms to go up). I went to IF after reading in General that the flight from SW took approx. 15 minutes. I check the Flight Master, and to my utter amazement, I too had the flight path. So far I've found one message saying that perhaps the FP would be obtained at lvl65 instead of 70, but can't find more than one person's thought. Could anyone confirm that? I am just curious. Or did I glitch my way into Quel'Danas. I have to add, that when I went there, me and a few guildies ventured into Magister's Terrace (I got 2k+ xp per kill too lol), and at that point a server restart countdown started.

Well I haven't seen anything anywhere about a level requirement for that Flight Path. None at all.

The mobs however are around 70ish so of course you shouldn't take a level 41 up there ;D

Usaully a "attempt to call ___________ (a nil value)" means something has not been defined . Usaully this indicates either a library that hasn't been installed or a lazy author who forgot to change some variables around.

What I would do would be to update from the latest version then do a search of the code for all occurences of "updateCharacter" or functions named similar to it.

    I like this part :

"The combat logging mechanism is completely overhauled with explicit data instead of text strings delivered to the UI. See slouken's post below for a sneak-peak at some of the current details. Highlights include detailed flags indicating relationship of involved units to player, unique identifiers for units with the same name within the combat log -- great for log analysis."

    *yes* *pumps fist*

Now we can have more accurate healing meters (I under stand the Prayer of Mending shows up under who ever had it last in the current combat log)

posted a message on Guild Bank Mod Suggestions?
    Quote from speak »

I haven't found anything so far. I know it's only been a couple weeks since they were implemented, but I figured there would be at least a few things coded up!

I'm mainly looking for a mod I can open up and see a cached version of my alt's guild bank that I'm using for storage now (goodbye 4 bank alts, hello 2 vault tabs!).

    Thanks for any ideas :)

The Armory's been updated to display guild banks when logged into it.

Should make something like this a lot easier to do - just alt tab to a bookmarked armory page

Yes I pinged the IP too and it goes no problems. But the reason why the site is down... if it is not the traffic (see quote below) then I wonder WHY it is down as they have not announced anything about it? :o

It really can't be because of the crash prevention and I doubt there are so much traffic either, WoWinterface and Curse-Gaming sites are still very well operational, and those are the first ones to go down if something goes down.

It's Patch Time. It's going to mean that the Major sites including Curse and Ace are going to get hit really hard. As I recall for the last 2 patchs curse has put in mirrors and other things to alleviate the stress on their end. And they still go down at time to time.

Also Im pretty sure the Ace team's file server is a third party server run by donations. If you want more mirrors why don't you pay for them ?

Best thing to do is disable all your addons and hang around on the irc channel waiting for the bot to annouce changes to your addons
