    Hi Samasnier,

I expect the Sort addon to continue working for the foreseeable future, because I don't think the API commands to pick up items and put them somewhere else in the bags will be changed. Also, I did not use any hardcoded values like the number of bank slots or the size of the standard bag. Instead, I used the predefined variables. Should Blizzard ever change the size of your bags, the addon should automatically follow.

Of course, its FuBar implementation might break if the author of FuBar makes radical changes. Let's hope he doesn't. Same goes for Ace. But since the libraries are in the same folder as Sort, maybe it will continue working.

I feel sorry to disappoint you, but I like playing the game more than writing and updating addons and BankStack provided me with the functionality I was looking for when writing Sort.

By the way, if you use BankStack in combination with FuBar, you can alt-click it to sort your bank.

    Hey everyone,

I have decided to stop working on this addon. Rabbit was right in saying that BankStack offers all functionality that you need to sort your inventory and is more advanced and faster than my Sort addon. I myself am using BankStack now, instead of Sort, and that is a clear sign.

I will remove the repository from WowAce, to keep things neat and tidy.

I apologize to those of you who enjoy using my addon, but encourage you to check out BankStack. Thanks for your enthousiastic replies and support.

    Hey everyone,

thanks a lot for the great comments. To be honest, I am quite surprised you like this addon so much. Rabbit pointed out "BankStack" to me and when I tried it I felt ashamed for coming up with "Sort". BankStack is faster and has more options and so I thought I was put to shame. But it seems there is a market for "Sort" after all.

I have begun altering "Sort" so it uses the Periodic Table addon to improve the categorization of items, but so far I have not been pleased with the results. Biggest problem is the lack of a complete "Gear" table. There is only support for a limited range of set pieces.

What I can do, however, is increase the sort options and put Lewzephyr's suggestion in there. I will keep you updated on the progress.

No hard feelings, Rabbit, thanks for your reply.

I have looked for alternatives, but perhaps I did not look well enough to know about BankStack. I tried MrPlow, Bagnon, Sanity... none of them I liked very much. I prefer the standard Warcraft bags and did not like the so-called funny quotes generated by MrPlow. I have used RussBags, but it was not actively maintained anymore and the code was quite messy to begin with. Therefor I decided to give it a go myself, with the Sort addon as result.

Why would I remove it, Rabbit? First of all, it does not hurt to have a choice when it comes to addons. My addon does its job, is clean and fast and lots of guildies (my testers) said it is exactly what they were looking for.

Secondly, there are many many addons in the SVN repository that are hopelessly outdated.

Third, I personally prefer this addon over MrPlow, which is way too verbose in my opinion.

BankStack has more options and functionality, no doubt about it. Yet it does not offer support for localization. I have not checked how fast MrPlow and BankStack are at the moment, but I doubt they are much faster than my addon.

So, with your permission (you are a moderator after all), I would like to keep this addon in the SVN repository. It serves a purpose and fullfills a need.

What's the difference between Sort and BankStack?

I don't know the BankStack addon, to be honest. So I can only answer you by describing what Sort does. This will also answer the 2nd post:

I like the idea, but I would love to have the ability to define for myself how I want the sort to work. Any information on if Sort is done or if you have anything else planned?

The Sort addon physically sorts your bags, either your (5) backpacks or the bank bags. Other bag addons replace the bag windows with their own version and to sort the items they don't rely on moving the items around. But I like the standard Warcraft bags, I was just looking for a way to keep them organised.

When you activate sort, the addon first tries to stack all items. If you have 3 stacks of Netherweave Cloth:
    Netherweave Cloth (19)
    Netherweave Cloth (16)
    Netherweave Cloth (4)

, Sort will stack them to:
    Netherweave Cloth (20)
    Netherweave Cloth (19)
    empty slot

, thus freeing up one slot. After stacking is done, it will move the items around, so the same items are sitting in slots next to eachother, and items of the same type and quality are near to eachother.

The sort order I use is:
    1. move empty slots to the end
    2. move all worthless (gray) items to the end
    3. sort by category:
    -priority items (Hearthstone)
    -trade goods
    4. sort by quality (from legendary to gray)
    5. sort by subtype
    6. sort by name

To enable users to change this order, I would have to implement a UI. Since this is only my 2nd addon, I am not ready for that. I am planning to use the Periodic Table 3.1 in the very near future, instead of my flawed internal database, so this might make things a bit more structured. I will choose the sort order in such a way that items that are used or consumed most often will go towards the end of your bags, where items that you keep for a very long time will be at the beginning.

Expect Sort to update during this week, or coming weekend. But don't expect too many new features yet. Just an improvement here and there.

Thanks for your feedback, keep it coming!

Thanks Phanx :) With that code snippet I should be able to find a workable solution.

Edit: and thanks for the stand-alone version, too!

    Hey Nymbia,

assuming you are the author of Periodic Table 3.1, I direct this message to you. I am currently developing an addon that needs to be able to determine an item's category and your library seems perfect for the job. I have looked at the LUA code, of both the library and addons using it, but I can't get my head around how to find an item's category when I have its linkID.

Would you please be so kind to direct me to some documentation about PT31, or can you show me how to write a function like:

    function MyAddon:GetCategoryByLinkID(linkID)
-- finds out to which category the item belongs,
     -- e.g. returns "Misc.Mount.Flying" if linkID == "25471"

    Thanks in advance.
