    Ugh, I won't let IE6 (in any form) anywhere near my system. Since I am not premium, I guess I will not be updating from Curse except for those mods who only live on Curse (mostly mods still in alpha/beta states). IE6 (even on Linux) is just too insecure for my taste. I will not open up attack vectors just so I can easily update AddOns.

    Grr, I really wish that the idea of using QT had born fruit instead of this proprietary Microsoft crap (WPF and .NET 3.5). Sure, I know the WPF widgets look great on a Windows system but it makes Linux users look like second class citizens. Too bad there is not money and time to guild a QT/GTK based version for the 'nix users.

    OK, I am going to be returning to WoW in the near future and I have decided to get my UI files updated. I attempted to download CC 4 however it seems that CC 4 uses some bits of .NET that either does not have an Mono equivalent (I am using Linux with the most recent stable Mono build installed from the Debian/Ubuntu repos) or it's some proprietary part of .NET that cannot be reversed engineered (and added to Mono) due to legal restrictions.

    The CC4 installer was attempting to download ".NET Framework Client Profile" of which it seems to be required for CC and I suspect there is not Mono equivalent. The installer was looking for "DotNetFx35ClientSetup.exe"

    There was some noise a few months back about some work on a version of CC that is Linux friendly. I personally don't care if it's based/written using C#/.NET as long as it uses code that can be covered by Mono. I just would like a working updater that can pull from Curse/CurseForge/WoWAce as I tend to test new projects (like DXE).

    At this point, Cartographer along with FuBar need to die. They have had their time in the sun and were great mods at the time. However WoW and its community have moved on while both Cartographer and FuBar now fossils. Sure they may work (sort of), however their underlying foundation is rotting. By doing the "randomly trying things until they work" thing, you are not actually fixing the underlying problems, you are just applying cellophane tape to a rotting structure. If you really want to fix the problems, you need to actually find the problem(s), understand the problem(s) and then actually fix the problem(s). Randomly sticking tape on the "holes" does fix a small cosmetic problem but does nothing to fix the actual problem. Plus it's a good way to piss off those have to clean up the mess afterward.

    I have got some ideas floating around in this hanger I call my skull. However they depend if I find the time to get those ideas in SciTE.

    I am feeling rather comfortable with Linux now. This is my current Ubuntu 9.10 desktop:


    Windows (Firefox and Amarok)

    Plenty of tinkering however I am extremely happy with the results. I have even manged to theme the Gnome Indicator-Applet-Session daemon which is something most icon themes miss. Next bit of tinkering involves the KDE icon theme so the KDE apps (like Amarok) icons are more consistent with with my Gnome theme. Likely I will combine a black version of KDE's Oxygen theme (particularly folders) with my Gnome icon theme (Magog White).

    The GTK+ 2 Theme is Fundamental combined with the Lithium Metacity theme. Wall paper is from Interfacelift.com.

    That is correct. Curse.com (the site) started out as the website for the guild Curse, which at the time was one of the major raiding guilds on Stormscale EU (way before they moved to Vek'nilash, then changed to Meet Your Makers, then SK Gaming PvE, finally the merger with Nihilum to form Ensidia). Curse (the guild) started hosting a few AddOns on their site back in the early days of vanilla WoW. In those days the site was called Curse-Gaming.com. You would get both news of Curse guild's achievements in WoW as well as AddOns. It was simple, the color scheme was plain (blues and greys), however the important thing is it worked nicely. However the AddOns side of the site eventually overwhelmed the guild side of the site.

    Not long after the release of Burning Crusade, Curse guild sold the Curse-Gaming site (which then converted to Curse.com), set up a new site just for the guild (Curse.org which eventually redirected to SK-Gaming and now the curse.org URL is in the hands of a cybersquatter) and are no longer affiliated with Curse.com.

    Regarding Phanx's statement, yes I have to agree completely. I don't bother with Curse.com. It's way too slow to load (if it loads at all, many times, I get the eternal "Waiting for http://www.curse.com" status message in Firefox's status bar. I can get up, get a snack, annoy the cat, put away my laundry, come back to the PC and find that Curse.com still has not loaded. I don't goto Curse.com for news (that is what MMO-Champion and World of Raids is for), I don't care for the half baked social functions of the site (then again, I don't use Facebook or MySpace either) and I despise the layout of the Curse site. Give me Curse-gaming back!

    As it stands, I don't bother going to Curse even for AddOns. I will first hit WoWInterface, then if I can't find what I am looking for, I will raid the CF/W repos as it much faster to download from CF/W (fewer clicks, CF/W loads much faster) as opposed to Curse.

    When someone called out BrotherSoft regarding the unauthorized uploading of WoW AddOns, the so-called BrotherSoft rep had this to say:
    First, we do the auditing work on publication requests from users instead of direct release on Brothersoft by somebody. If there is any kind of person fills and submits the software author information, this is really hard to identify.

    Next, we will immediately handle it depending on the status verification once we get any email from real authors.

    Finally, we Brothersoft do respect copyright of authors, and we are always aiming at providing the safe and fast downloading service for all the users.
    Since then, BrotherSoft has been rather silent. Someone else did some digging on BrotherSoft and it appears to be Chinese in origin:

    OK, the news of the icons of skulls and such changing into icons of boxes/bags is not old news as it was in a WoWInsider (now WoW.com) post a couple of weeks ago. They also noted that changes to appease the authorities in WoW are not new. Forsaken for several months do not show bones, nor do you leave a skeleton behind when you rez, instead you leave a tombstone. WoW.com had some screenshots of a Battleground and just outside of IF where there was a ton of tombstone/graves. It looked pretty ridiculous to me however then again, I normally play on EU servers. I don't think the serious Chinese players are going to rush back to Chinese servers, rather they will stick with the Taiwanese ones as the content is updated in a timely fashion nor do they have to deal with the PRC censors sticking their nose into the game content.

    Regarding the German "no blood or other images of graphic death", this is actually quite old (several years). The German authorities are quite sensitive to depictions of violence. Plus almost any depiction of Nazi symbols is illegal (so no killing SS thugs in Wolfenstien or other games). Most German gamers that I know prefer to buy their games elsewhere.

    Thanks! Essentially my goal is strip my UI down to the bare metal and then build only what I need/use. I think I pulled it off quite well. I have done a fair amount of custom tweaking of my mods (I am beginning to really love config by lua only mods as I am learning a good deal by diving in and tweaking). Too bad my UI project is now on hold until my return...

    This is a UI I was working on before I got knocked out of WoW and entered my semi-retired state. I don't have an in-combat shot nor do I have a raid shot (I never raided with this toon as I lost my Windows install shortly afterward and my Ubuntu 9.04 install does not support WoW (my ATI GFX card is too old for the drivers that do have decent 3d OpenGL/D3D via WINE model support). The UI files are safe however and currently in a frozen state along with my Death Knight.

    I was going for a semi-minimalist look. When I am in combat or mouse over the area, an additional 14 button bar appears under the main bar. In addition two smaller 8 button bars on either side of the main bar (visible upon mouseover) allow for access to non-combat items (such as frequently used mounts, elixirs, buff foods and such). Both the main bar and secondary bar are keybound (I use a combo of keybinds and clicking for combat, it works well for me). Over the player UF will appear Forte timer bars for abilities while a Forte CD bar appears below the action bars to track CDs.

    In addition major mods in use (but not seen/hidden in the screenshot) include !LyMedia (custom texture mod), !LySettings (custom UI settings containing a fair bit of custom code plus code from smaller mods that I like and have tweaked to taste), !ClassColors, MiksScrollingBattleText, Clique (for my healer alt), Camma's UI textures, caelNameplates (a customized fork), Quartz, Outfitter (outfit bar is hidden just above my chat), and assorted oUF plugins to support my oUF layout.

    Fonts used: ExpresswayFree is the main one used by most of the visible mods including oUF_Nivaya and Eavesdrop, WoW UI (including Chat) fonts is Bitstream Vera Sans Bold
    Texture used: Bars - Minimalist (from SharedMedia), custom textures via my own art AddOn. The default Blizzard UI elements have been replaced by Camma's wonderful frames.

    This was (and still is once I get back in a few months) a work in progress so some things are out of place such as the quest tracker is visible (only quests that in that area should be seen via the "tracked" tracker) and some Broker plug-ins are seen twice. The quest tracker is now hidden in my latest version. However even in this state it is quite usable, fast (even on my old hardware) and will be a great UI to use for raiding.

    Hmm, that would explain why a mod I tried to install (via the install button on the WoWAce project page) the other night, failed. It too was an Alpha release (the project is only in the Alpha stages). Glad it wasn't just me doing something stupid...
